Carol and Chris Loumakis recently joined Kathy and Mike for a two week vacation in Greece.  Note: if you don't get the clue from the hair, Carol is Kathy's sister.  Chris speaks Greek fluently, and served as a great translator and guide.  His Dad grew up on the Island of Hydra, and relatives of the Loumakis family still live on the Island.  We had a great time and lots of good food.  Below are some photos of our visit to Athens, and the drive through the Peloponnisos (southern tip of Greece) and visits to the Islands of Hydra and Poros.

We first visted Athens and the Acropolis.  Here are a few photos taken of the Parthenon area.

"No Posing in Olympia!"

Here are a few shots taken in Olympia, the ancient home of the original Olympics, one of our favorite places during our trip.

Below is shown a beautiful Cathedral in Patra on the north coast of the Peloponnisos, where Carol and Chris' Bishop has a home.

Just FYI, in the photo below, Chris is the one on the left.

Below is a roadside taverna where we had lunch just outside Galatas.  We did not have a bad meal during the entire two weeks.

Below is a shot of a typical village, several of which we enjoyed as we drove hundreds of miles through the Peloponnisos.

Below is shown another great roadside lunch near Mystras, where we enjoyed the surprise of a nice hike up a mountain to see ancient ruins.

Below is Hydra, where John Loumakis (Chris' Dad) was born.  This was the highlight of our trip.  Nice peaceful place (no motor vechiles, our bags were delivered to our hotel by donkey).  If you ever go to Greece, we recommend you visit the Island of Hydra.

Pictured below (centered) is the house in which Chris' Dad and two of his brothers were born, recently renovated by a local lawyer.  One of our many missions during this trip was to find this house and maybe also people who remembered the Loumakis family.

DSC02990.jpg

The only person we found at the house was the cleaning lady.

However, we did find a long term resident next door neighbor Ya-Ya (Greek for grandmother) who remembered the Loumakis family.

And we found some Loumakis cousins.

All that work finding houses and relatives can make you thirsty.

Below, Chris is shown with Leonida, owner of Leonida's Tavern, which has no signs, does not advertise, and you have to be invited to dine there.  Great food, highly recommended, if you can get invited.
